AVID

What is AVID?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and is a program that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university. Students take an AVID elective course throughout middle school and high school that provides them with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college. At Dana Middle School, AVID is currently offered as a yearlong elective class in the 7th and 8th Grades.

AVID Curriculum

The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. AVID is based on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR). AVID activities and curriculum are based on the premise of best teaching and learning practices. An AVID classroom and school revolves around the WICOR essentials and helps support student learning.
