YMCA Youth & Government Classes

San Pedro Youth & Government

What is MUN?
California YMCA Youth & Government has offered the Model United Nations (MUN) program to middle school students throughout the state since 2001. Middle school students or "ambassadors" come together in delegations and participate with peers from across California. They are given the opportunity to discuss international issues, discover other cultures, develop life-enhancing skills, and make new friends. Under the guidance of YMCA staff and volunteers, the program includes weekly meetings, a 1-day training conference and the culminating 2-night Model United Nations Summit. There, our middle-school delegates represent assigned countries as ambassadors and work to solve global issues with the skills they have acquired.

Principal's Message

Hello, and welcome to the website of Dana Middle School! We appreciate your interest, and look forward to hosting you on our campus in the near future. When you do arrive at Dana, you will marvel at the look and feel of our school. Built in 1928, Dana is a beautiful campus, showcasing the mosaic tiling and arched column breezeways characteristic of classic Spanish architecture. And I am happy to report that Dana is now looking better than ever, due to bungalows that have been renovated and painted, a library that’s been refurbished with new books and furniture, a state-of-the-art sound system installed in the auditorium, and new desks and chairs in all of our classrooms! Additionally, in the last two years, four beautiful murals have gone up around campus. Dana has never looked better, and we are anxious to roll out the red carpet for our staff, students, and parents!

The physical beauty of Dana Middle School represents a sense of pride that you can also feel. No other school staff is more welcoming to parents and nurturing to students. Dana is family, and since my first day on this campus, I have felt grateful to join a community of educators who are so kind, caring, and committed to helping students reach their full potential. Our mantra at Dana is “you can’t teach them if you don’t reach them,” and we take that to heart. Our success as educators stems from making meaningful and lasting relationships with our students. Our goal is to make every single child on this campus feel valued, respected, and encouraged to reach their full potential – both academically and emotionally.

Again, the opportunity for me as a principal to collaborate with the staff, students, and parents/guardians of the Dana Middle School community is an honor and a privilege. My job never has been and never will be Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. I am available to you anytime. Please do not hesitate to call or email when you have a question or concern, or better yet, stop by the Main Office when you are in the neighborhood. Dana’s doors are looking better than ever. . .and they are always open to you!
